Graduates should be able to relate effectively with a wide range of people. Specifically, students should be able to:
-
demonstrate relational and professional competence in relating across cultural boundaries with many different kinds of people;
-
in relating across functional boundaries with people of widely varied roles within higher education;
-
as representatives of the institutions they serve to those within the larger community.
Department Relationships Learning Reconsidered 2 promotes collaboration that utilizes resources in a way that “makes the total value greater than the sum of its parts.” (ACPA, et al, 2006). As a committee member of the UCR Homecoming planning team I was able to collaborate with many individuals from various departments on homecoming events. The homecoming events this year were larger and more successful in attendance than previous years. Through the planning process I was able to build stronger relationships with staff members I have worked with previously. In addition, I was able to meet individuals and identify ways to collaborate on other projects. One of these future collaborations includes a Parents Weekend with the Alumni Department. Community Relationships Community relationships are extremely important to many departments at UC Riverside, including Housing and Residence Life. Through programs like Monte Carlo, a large-scale casino program and dance, we have raised over $200 for the Cesar Chavez Community Center located in Riverside, which creates after school opportunities for elementary school children. In addition, I have also been able to develop community relationships with Planet Aid, a non-profit organization that collects shoes from various communities and resells these items to raise funds for projects in countries like Asia and Africa. While this program benefits countries globally, it has also benefited our residential community by providing a way for students to donate unwanted articles in a convenient and service-orientated manner. |
Other Student Relationships
One of my responsibilities includes overseeing the planning of Barn events on Thursday nights. Student organizations serve as hosts for these events and must communicate with me prior to the actual event to work out event details. I have enjoyed building relationships with these students outside Residence Life and have heard great feedback about their experience working with me. Recently, I was delighted when one of these students asked if they could use me as a reference for a campus job. Please see comments below from students who hosted events at the Barn.
“Also, I want to thank you for all your help with this event. You are awesome! You are very professional and you get things done! You have definitely made things easier! “
“And thanks soooooo much for everything you have done. It's been a great help and without you, this never would've happened!”
“Oh thank you! It was awesome, it was (organization name) first time at The Barn and everyone was so welcoming to the musicians and (name) and his assistant were very helpful as well.”
