Graduates should be able to design and implement high quality and multi-faceted student programs which enhance student learning and personal development.  Specifically, students should be able to demonstrate:

  • the skills necessary in conducting accurate needs assessment;
  • an understanding of the dynamics involved in student learning in the co-curriculum;
  • the ability to write program mission statements and to articulate desired student learning outcomes;
  • the ability to design and implement creative and effective student programs.

Tunnel of Oppression Event

Tunnel of Oppression is an annual student-led event that I oversee.  The program focuses on different forms of oppression manifested through skits and passive information presented by students.  As the Programs Manager, I must make sure that this program remains intentional and provides accurate information on historical events.  The program also allows for reflective thinking, a dimension of the cognitive complexity student learning outcome of Learning Reconsidered 2, by incorporating a debriefing session in which students can reflect on their experience with counselors from our counseling center (ACPA, et al, 2006).

Underground Event

Learning Reconsidered 2 states that every program should have clear and specific learning outcomes that link to the mission of the campus (ACPA, et al, 2006).  Diversity is part of UCR’s mission, which is reflected in the variety of diversity programs such as The Underground, an annual dance and drag show.  Prior to the event, an information passive with educational facts related to gender expression, gender identity, and drag are placed throughout the residence halls.  The subject is sensitive to those who have not been exposed to these ideas so that is why an educational passive is implemented.  In addition, each building is responsible to put on a program that addresses these issues and promotes the large event.  Attendees are encouraged to give a suggested donation at the door and all proceeds go to a local related charity.  See below for the event's learning outcomes.

Desired Learning Outcomes of The Underground

  • Increase knowledge about issues regarding history of drag and LGBT community

  • Understand and appreciate difference by exposing students to a different culture

  • Promote civic engagement by providing opportunities for charitable giving

  • Promote building community through face to face interactions

          Planet Aid Program

          Enhancing Student Learning asserts, “institutions should emphasize service to a larger outside world” (Stage, Watson, & Terrell, 1999, p. 71).  Last spring, I had the opportunity to incorporate this area by working with Planet Aid, a non-profit organization that collects and recycles used clothing and shoes.  These items are resold and proceeds are used to support education, community development, and HIV/Aids programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  Bins supplied by Planet Aid were placed in each residential community for a period of two weeks and over 2,000 pounds of clothing were collected. There was a lot of positive feedback about this program from students and from administrators.  Administrators enjoyed that less personal items were left behind during student move outs.  Students commented that they were more willing to give away items they didn’t need because they knew it was going to a good cause and would make a difference.
