Graduates should possess a well-defined personal moral, ethical, and spiritual
compass that provides grounding and direction. This “compass” should include:
-
personal moral, ethical, and spiritual commitments that are reflected through honesty, truth-telling, and servant-oriented approach to leadership;
-
an ability to articulate a Christian worldview that reflects the values, ethics, and principal teachings of the Christian faith;
-
an understanding of and commitment to the codes of ethics guiding the various student affairs professional organizations.
Strengths Quest
Cashman (2008) emphasizes the importance of authentic leadership, which includes building self-awareness of strengths and limitations. For a class assignment, we took the Strengths Quests, which identified my top 2 strengths as an achiever and learner. I have utilized these strengths in order to guide my practice as a student affairs professional at UCR. As an achiever, I am continually striving to do the best job I can to provide quality programs to the students. As a learner, I seek opportunities to become involved in different departments and initiatives. In addition, I also am aware of my limitations and utilize my strengths to improve in these areas.
Servant-Oriented Approach to Leadership: "Working Together"
One philosophy I have always abided by is don’t ask others to do work that you wouldn’t do. I have exercised this philosophy in my current position as the Programs Manger at UCR. At large-scale events that I oversee I make sure to participate in the set up and clean up of the program. I believe that it is extremely important to set an example and I believe my assistance helps gain respect from the students.
Revision of Residence Life Core Values
As part of a recent professional development, the residence life professional staff was given the task of revising our core values for the department. Many of the core values were parallel to my beliefs and commitment to the student affairs profession. The core values include community, diversity, integrity, partnership, and knowledge. Appreciation for diversity is extremely important to me not only because of the diverse campus community I am a part of, but also because of the value that exists in others' differences.
